Our Mission

Jazz, Education, Community

Healdsburg Jazz stimulates interest in and promotes awareness and appreciation of jazz by facilitating cross-cultural interaction, providing performance opportunities, and educating young people and adults about the important role of jazz as an indigenous American art form. We strive to:

  • Preserve, curate, present, and educate audiences about jazz music, one of America’s truly original art forms.
  • Build a strong community where people come together to share their love of music.
  • Expand our cultural offerings through the intersection of music, poetry, dance, theater, film, visual arts, and other art forms.
  • Integrate artistic programming with student education.
One of the best small jazz festivals in the country, if not the world.

San Francisco Chronicle

Music addresses the 4 C's: Creativity, Collaboration, Community, and Critical Thinking. Healdsburg Jazz provides this for our students, California schools have not designated this funding, so we are very grateful.

Rhonda Bellmer

Educator and Resident
To the community, it's more than the music, even though that's critical. It's about putting together all the resources; a very special communal effort that happens to be around jazz music. People wait all year just to be involved to donate their time or home or money.

Julian Lage

Musician
The Festival really feels like a festival. People who don't even listen to or know much about jazz go because they're aware that something special has been brought into their town. So they listen, they are open to a wide range of programming, have learned over the years ... to check it out. That's a really positive thing about the Festival.

Fred Hersch

Musician
For me, Babatunde Lea and Kahlil Shaheed (Healdsburg Jazz instructors) were a huge inspiration. Culturally, in Healdsburg, and as a student, you don't very often get to talk to people of different cultures. It was cool to talk to two African- Americans who play jazz.
